Position Details
Destination Exploration (DE) is seeking a part-time Science Sizzle Instructor ($17.00/hour, 8-10 hours/week) for its in-school Science Sizzle Club to begin September 18th, 2023.

DE is the University of Lethbridge’s Youth STEM organization located in the Science Commons on campus with a mission to bring science and technology to life in a fun and educational manner. We are seeking a creative and motivated person to develop and run our Science Sizzle Club for students grades 4-6, which runs two evenings a week at local elementary schools from October 4 to November 27 (potential to extend until March 25, 2024). This will include developing creative and hands-on STEM lessons and implementing these with club participants, evaluation, and general administration work. As this club will run off-campus, the instructors must possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle.

An individual in this position will gain experience in public speaking, classroom management, educational lesson planning, administration skills and valuable communication soft skills. DE programs work with a variety of technology used in K-12 education that you will be taught how to use effectively such as Spheros, Ozobots, Makey Makey, Micro:bit, TinkerCAD and 3D printing.

Main Duties:
  • Prepare activities and programs for a 4-week, 90-minute club session and deliver them weekly at schools.
  • Maintain club space and program materials.
  • Assist students with activities as needed and encourage a safe, team atmosphere.
  • Conduct program evaluation.
  • Ensure that all participants conduct themselves safely within a safe environment.

This position reports to the Program Coordinator and will be required to work 5-8 hours per week at $17.00/hr. Hours allocated to program planning are flexible but must be available two of (Tues, Wed, Thurs) afternoons from 3:00pm – 5:30pm.

Position Qualifications
  • Current Standard First Aid (or proof of completion by October 4th, 2023).
  • Satisfactory current criminal record check (including vulnerable sector).
  • Must hold a Full Licence & access to a vehicle. A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.
  • Experience working with school-aged children.
  • A strong background or knowledge in a scientific or technology field.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • A high aptitude for technology would be an asset.
